A Mumsnet user went viral after asking for advice on how to deal with a neighbor who assumed she can drive both their kids to and from school every day.

A mom sparked a viral debate after posting a blog on the popular UK-based parenting forum, Mumsnet, where she asked for advice in how to politely turn down a neighbor who expected her to pick up and bring back her child from school every single day.

Article continues below advertisement

In 2017, Guardian reported on carpooling initiatives in the country that could alleviate traffic for regular morning commuters headed to work each and every day by relying on apps like Liftshare. These types of services helped to connect drivers headed in the same direction so they could set up regular driving schedules with one another.

A user of the service interviewed in the Guardian piece states that, while reducing carbon emissions, saving money, and helping keep more cars off the road were definitely pluses, the main incentive for them to share their ride with someone was to help ease their “boredom” during their morning commute.

And while Mumsnet user @Anxious32 doesn’t seem to mind occasionally bringing her neighbor’s son to school, she is opposed to the idea of it becoming a regular thing.

She titled her now viral post, “How to decline giving a lift politely” and explains her predicament to the other moms. “We have moved and Son (year 4) has started a new school. We’re having work done to the house so not living there at the moment we are living about 30 minutes away temporarily. [Next door neighbor] son is also in my child’s new school in his class!”

She continued, “The mother has commented in the handful of brief 5 minutes I have met her previously how hard things are for her in terms of getting to school etc. obviously hinting but as we haven’t moved there not outwardly asked yet! My Son came back from school on Friday and said ‘x said we’ll be travelling to school together.’”

The mom didn’t appreciate the fact that her neighbor was treating free transportation for her child to school on @Anxious32’s behalf as a foregone conclusion, either. “I know where all this is leading and will result in me having to provide her with free transport ‘just because I’m going there too.’”

Some advice from another Mumsnet user.

Article continues below advertisement

It seems like she was most worried about being placed in a situation where she feels as if she can’t say no to her neighbor, and it appears this fear is rooted in past experiences.

“Just for context I’m very softly spoken and can be a door mat. Also this is [real life] so I cannot do the usual mumsnet line of ‘No is a complete sentence’. I have to keep things civil as we will be NDN plus see each other at school.”

“How can I politely say I don’t want to?” she asks her fellow mums. “My mum who enables my doormat behaviour thinks I should ‘help the poor lady out’. In the past situations like that have results in so much inconvenience for me such as not being able to spontaneously just go for ice-cream after school or pop to a friend’s house. It’s also annoying having to be on same-time each bloody time.”

Mumsnet users were divided on the issue. There were some who couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t at least take her neighbor’s son to school when she leaves in the morning and work out an arrangement where her neighbor brought the kids home.

Others said to create or bring up a post-school events she might have to tend to afterwards, which would make bringing the neighbor home difficult some days. While some told her to flat-out say “no,” others suggested a more delicate, like setting up a schedule for one or a couple of days a week where she could handle transportation duties.

What do you think? Should OP be more considerate of her neighbor’s needs? Or do you think that the neighbor in question is a bit presumptuous in just assuming that someone would be in charge of their kid, so much so that they’re even mentioning it to their child before bringing it up to OP?

Why Did Amazon Drop Venmo? Tech Giant Hasn’t Explained

Published

on

Amazon will no longer accept Venmo as a payment option starting in January 2024. Why has Amazon decided to drop the payment service?

Source: Getty Images

The Gist:

  • Amazon announced that it will no longer be accepting Venmo as a payment method for purchases beginning on Jan. 10, 2024.
  • The tech giant hasn’t explained its decision, but some have speculated that Venmo wasn’t a secure enough payment platform to partner with Amazon.
  • Amazon will still take payment from Venmo debit and credit cards.

Article continues below advertisement

Although Amazon offers its users many things, one of the things it prizes most is convenience. You can order things quickly, and they’ll ship to you almost immediately. Another way that the tech giant has maximized convenience is by allowing you to pay for goods in a huge variety of different ways.

Recently, though, Amazon announced that it will no longer be accepting payments through Venmo starting early in 2024. Now, many want to know why Amazon decided to stop accepting Venmo payments. Keep reading for all of the details.

Why did Amazon drop Venmo?

In Amazon’s announcement that it will no longer be accepting Venmo payments, the company didn’t explain its decision. The tech giant did emphasize that there are still many ways for users to pay for orders, including using a credit card and through Apple Pay.

Amazon said that the change would be effective on Jan. 10, 2024, and that users would have to switch their payment method before then.

Article continues below advertisement

The company placed a particular emphasis on any subscriptions that might be tied to a Venmo account, as those will be charged automatically and be rejected if the payment information isn’t updated.

Also, Amazon clarified that while payments from Venmo itself will be banned, payments from Venmo credit cards or debit cards will still be allowed, just like most other major credit cards.

Because Amazon hasn’t explained its decision, all the public can do is speculate about why it may have decided to ban Venmo. Amazon might be launching some sort of rival service, and it wants to preemptively remove Venmo so that users will have to sign up for its service instead. Ultimately, though, we won’t know for sure until Amazon decides to explain the decision.

Some think that people were using Venmo to scam Amazon.

Another potential reason that Venmo payments are no longer allowed is that Venmo wasn’t a safe enough payment platform, which meant that some users were able to use it to orchestrate scams.

Venmo was created largely to allow people who knew one another to directly transfer cash back and forth without an intermediary like a bank. It wasn’t designed to be used as payment for larger companies.

Although services like Venmo have some pretty obvious perks, there are also some downsides when it comes to things like security. Amazon is one of the largest retailers in the world, and that obviously means that it wants its marketplace to be a safe place for buyers and sellers to do business, even if that means that people who pay with Venmo are out of luck.

Delivery Driver Ruins Christmas

Published

A dad and his two kids are going viral on TikTok after they accidentally saw a Christmas gift on their doorstep, ruining the surprise.

There’s something undeniably magical about Christmas, especially when you’re a kid and you get to wake up in the morning and see the gifts that Santa brought you in the middle of the night.

You thank your parents for allowing the jolly, large, bearded man to come into your home and hook you up with all of the gifts you’ve been begging them to get you.

Article continues below advertisement

You don’t question the economics of how Santa manages to make deals with companies from across the globe that are at the top of their respective industries. Nor do you really care about how one man is able to make so many deliveries in a single night or how he gets into houses without chimneys.

You just know that there’s no better feeling than tearing open that wrapping paper and seeing that special gift you’ve been thinking about for a long time.

And even if you don’t believe in Santa Clause or that Elves are making handshake deals with Japanese gaming companies to manufacture Nintendo Switches, you can still enjoy that element of surprise.

That is, unless an ill-timed delivery ruins the magic for you, which is what happened to this family in a viral TikTok and it looks like their doorbell camera recorded the entire thing.

TikToker @frankpappalardo writes in a text overlay of the clip: “The problem with ordering online when you have kids…”

In the clip, a dad can be seen coming home with his two daughters — it looks like they were picked up from school. And what was waiting for them? A giant box containing a toy that one his kids was really, really excited about.

Unsure of how to cover up the fact that the big Christmas surprise was effectively ruined at that moment, he stammers through some excuses that even the most gullible of children probably wouldn’t believe.

It’s hilarious to see him react in real-time, cussing up a storm and trying to convince the girls that they didn’t see the gifts or that it actually wasn’t for them but for someone else, but those kids seemed to know what was up.

Which means that they’ll have to play the waiting game until Christmas when they can finally open the gift.

It’s difficult to not wonder though: was he not receiving email updates about the status of his delivery? If it was delivered from Amazon he should’ve received a notification that it was delivered.

Or perhaps the source of his ire was the fact that he left specific instructions about the delivery, or maybe he just thought that the gift would’ve been delivered in a box and not just, you know, left out in the open for everyone in the world to see what he purchased?

Article continues below advertisement

He hints as much in the video, and it’s not that difficult to understand his frustration: it’s not like you get a Playstation 5 delivered to your house and the parcel service simply leaves the box on your front doorstep, unless it’s wrapped up in a different package.

What do you think? Is this on whoever delivered the package? Or should dad have been more proactive in monitoring when the packages were coming to the house and not assumed that there was going to be a box big enough to fit the large gift that he ordered for Christmas?
