Philadelphia Wawa Features New Order Through Kiosk Service

Published

on

A Phildadelphia-based Wawa convenience store features a “controversial” new system in which customers can order through a kiosk. Let’s break it down.

When it comes to the 50 states of America, certain states have cultural aspects and factors that make them individual. New York has good pizza and a famous metropolis that gets destroyed in just about every sci-fi movie. California is best known as the hub for all things Hollywood. Florida provides loving homes for elderly racists and transphobes, not to mention the infamous Florida Man. Then there’s Philadelphia, which has plenty of things that make it uniquely Philly.

There’s the Philly Cheesesteak, the Liberty Bell, the violent sports riots whether a team wins or loses, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and of course, there’s Wawa.

Though this chain of convenience stores operates in multiple states like New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland, the chain has its greatest presence in Philly. For all intents and purposes, Wawa is a Philly thing. Unfortunately, its new system of ordering through kiosks is causing a bit of a stir on the internet.

This Philadelphia Wawa lets you order through kiosks, but customers are conflicted.

In late August 2023, TikToker No Shorts (@noshortsusa) posted a TikTok about their visit to Wawa. They typically upload videos pertaining to all things Philly, including sporting events, city landscape views, and celebrity visits. Unfortunately, their trip to Wawa wasn’t necessarily something to celebrate.

If you’re making a run to a convenience store like Wawa, you’re typically only going to pick up a quick snack to take home or to munch on right away. It’s the kind of place where you’d want to just grab your stuff and go. However, the Wawa experience has been brought to the 21st century in the weirdest way possible.

Gone are the shelves of food, simple groceries, and snacks that you could simply pluck from. In OP’s TikTok, this particular Philly location for Wawa has completely cleared the store floor in place of kiosks with touch pads. Because of this new layout, the way you order has completely changed too.

Customers are made to use the kiosk to poke and flip through categories to find the thing they’re actually looking for. Once you’ve made your selections and paid for everything, you approach a manned counter, where someone working the counter will eventually hand you a bag with your items. OP highlighted the convoluted nature of this whole process by going through each of the steps just to pick up their order of one bag of Sour Patch Kids.

By nature, a convenience store should be, well … convenient! Adding new technology to something isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but not when it adds so many extra steps to a process that basically boiled down to “walk in, pick up items, purchase, and leave.” Having to swipe through all those categories is quantifiably less convenient than doing all of this yourself.

Folks in the comments section are somewhat divided about whether or not this is a good thing for Wawa. One TikTok user found screens like this inaccessible, claiming that “when you click next to scroll through the snacks screen or something, it just takes you to checkout.”

Another person claims that they “didn’t know what to do” when walking into these souped-up new Wawas. OP themselves even seemed flabbergasted at the changes.

Interestingly enough, though, some people were either intrigued or supportive of the changes.

One person stated, “Wawa is actually so smart for this.” Another even called it “genius.”

For the most part, though, Philly-based Wawa fans decried the changes made to this particular store. Many believe that the unspoken culture of the store has been tarnished by its attempt to streamline the shopping experience.

Do you think your convenience store shopping could use a glow up or would you rather just walk into a Wawa, pick up whatever you need yourself, and leave without the need of a touch screen?

What happened to Krayzie Bone?

Anthony is in the hospital because he suffers from an autoimmune condition known as sarcoidosis. The disease is inflammatory and causes the immune system to overreact to perceived threats, leading to pockets of inflamed tissue called granulomas.

Reports suggest that Anthony had a CAT scan that revealed one of his arteries was leaking into his lung, but surgery designed to stop the problem was not a success.

Now, reports suggest that Anthony is on a breathing machine and has been sedated.

This serious condition is genuinely worrisome, and it’s unclear when or if Anthony will ever wake up from his medically induced coma. As a result of his severe condition, many celebrities and others who knew Anthony well or were even just big fans have offered their thoughts and prayers following the news that he was hospitalized.

DJ Paul, an accomplished musician in his own right, added an even lengthier statement. “Please pray for my brother Kray. We was just in the lab Wednesday recording, having fun, drinking his new IPA. This is unbelievable,” he wrote.

There are clearly many people invested in Anthony’s recovery, however long it may take.

The group has earned its reputation as one of the biggest names in hip hop, and worked with everyone from Tupac to Biggie over the course of their long career in the world of music.

Now, the group’s other members are worried about their friend, and hoping he can pull through following this hospitalization. Sarcoidosis is a serious illness, and it’s one that is difficult to treat because it is a disease of the autoimmune system. The coming days will be crucial in understanding where Anthony’s condition ultimately goes from here, and whether he’s able to make a recovery or not.

“Victoria’s Secret Karen” Lawsuit Says She Was Mislabeled

Published

on

The legal teams for Abigail Elphick and Ijeoma Ukenta, have said the “Victoria’s Secret” Karen viral video wasn’t about race, as previously assumed.

Just the Gist:

  • Abigail Elphick and Ijeoma Ukenta were involved in a viral TikTok that gave Abigail the nickname “Victoria’s Secret Karen”
  • Abigail’s legal team states she suffers from multiple mental and physical health conditions.

  • Ijeoma sued Abigail and Victoria’s Secret in 2023 for reportedly being “extremely dismissive” during the ordeal.

Since 2020, the term “Karen” has been a social stigma on white women in U.S. society. The term spawned a meme and a character trait, as cases viral videos of white women threatening to call the police and other authorities on strangers who were notably Black or other people of color began emerging on TikTok and other platforms.

In July 2021, Abigail Elphick, a then-25-year-old white woman living in Milburn, N.J., found herself labeled as the “Victoria’s Secret Karen” after chasing a Black woman named Ijeoma Ukenta for recording her behavior in the famed lingerie store.

Two years after their “Victoria’s Secret Karen,” incident went viral, Abigail and Ijeoma filed lawsuits against one another, with Abigail stating the public mislabeled her and her intentions on that fateful day.

Legal filings revealed “Victoria’s Secret Karen” Abigail Elphick has a “long history of medical and psychological conditions.”

By now, millions of social media users have seen Abigail and Ijeoma’s viral TikTok exchange (and if you haven’t keep scrolling!), which involved Abigail hysterically crying as she begs Ijeoma “please don’t record me” and chasing Ijeoma around the store. In September 2023, Abigail and her legal team shared that the truth behind the video is vastly different than what viewers were led to believe.

According to The New York Times (via Yahoo), legal filings show that Abigail, who was quickly labeled Victoria’s Secret Karen on TikTok and other social platforms, was “disabled, with a long history of medical and psychological conditions” when she entered the Victoria’s Secret store.

Abigail’s team argues that her conditions prompted her “mental health breakdown” and that her behavior at Victoria’s secret wasn’t “race-based.” They stated Abigail was upset because she feared she would lose her job and her apartment, as she lives in a residence for those with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

The latter reportedly happened, as court records show Abigail received a call from a stranger threatening to rape and kill her, and other online users demanding she lose her internship as a local school district. The call prompted Tom Toronto, president of Bergen County’s United Way, the company that runs Abigail’s residence, to speak out in her defense.

“She has a disorder. She has anxiety,” he explained to The Times. “She had a meltdown. Then the world we live in took over, and it became something entirely different than what it actually was.”

Ijeoma Ukenta filed a lawsuit in July 2023 against Abigail and Victoria’s Secret.

Abigail’s September 2023 comments were in response to Ijeoma’s July 2023 lawsuit against Abigail and Victoria’s Secret.

On July 6, Ijeoma, a content creator, sued Abigail, Victoria’s Secret, and the store’s security guards. Ijeoma stated in her complaint that the store’s security “were extremely dismissive toward her,” and were “indifferent and nonchalant about her concerns for her safety.”

Amid Ijeoma’s filing, Abigail’s counterclaim accused Ijeoma of “harassment” for discussing her and Abigail’s altercation online.

Since the “Victoria’s Secret Karen” video went viral, Ijeoma has received flack for profiting off the incident.

Ijeoma’s GoFundMe and additional content surrounding her initial video caused many people following the story to raise their eyebrows. Several users, including Kasko Xero Vlogs stated she was using the incident for fame and money. In Abigail’s complaint, her lawyers accused her of making “a job out of preying on individuals from behind a keyboard,” and “inciting hate” online.

Ijeoma and her lawyer, Tracey Hinson, have defended the YouTuber profiting from her experience with Abigail. In 2021, Ijeoma said on X, formerly Twitter, that she was well within her rights to “make $ off MY videos if everyone else is.”

The entrepreneur’s attorney also believed it’s her client’s “right” to discuss the situation however she sees fit, especially after being deemed a liar by many in the Milburn community.

“She knew that in Millburn, New Jersey, she would not be believed,” Hinson stated. “And that is exactly what has transpired.”
