The Crown series 5 PICTURE EXCLUSIVE: Elizabeth Debicki and Dominic West film new scenes

Princess Diana and Prince Charles actors Elizabeth Debicki and Dominic West were seen filming new scenes for The Crown series 5 in Palma de Mallorca on Tuesday.

Elizabeth, 31, was joined on location by Dominic, 51, as they boarded the prestigious Christina O yacht off shore of the Balearic Island, in scenes recreating the royal pair’s family trip to Italy in 1991 – which took place a year before the couple divorced.

During the Nineties, Princess Diana and Prince Charles had embarked on a holiday with their children Prince William and Harry, then eight and six, which saw the family unified for a cruise on Charles’ beloved Alexandra yacht, despite the couple being just months away from calling off their marriage.

Child actors Timothee Sambor, 11, and Teddy Hawley, seven, who play the young princes respectively, were seen filming on the boat wearing matching white polo shirts.

The trip will have seen the royals put on a brave face as their marriage began to implode behind the scenes, in a year that saw the pair give their union a last ditch attempt at survival.

While cracks in the pair’s marriage began to show back in 1987, Diana had begun to speak out for the first time about her unhappiness, discussing her marital issues and difficulties in secret interviews with biographer Andrew Morton.

Although the tapes were not made public until the following year, following the release of Morton’s book Diana: Her True Story, they showed that the princess was extremely unhappy in her marriage and had attempted to commit suicide on numerous occasions.

In the tapes Diana said she developed bulimia a week after she became engaged – when Charles put his hand around her waist and commented on her weight by remarking she was ‘chubby’.

She said his remark, coupled with her anxiety over his affair with the then Camilla Parker Bowles, triggered the bulimia and gave her a way to release the «tension».

Diana added that she was also well aware of the prince’s affair with Camilla Parker Bowles and had attempted to discuss the infidelity with Charles and even the Queen, but was met with a blank ‘wall’ of silence.

To film the family holiday scenes, The Crown cast chartered the famous Christina O yacht, which was once owned by Jackie Kennedy and Aristotle Onassis.

Christina O has played host to several weddings on-board, including Princess Grace of Monaco and Prince Rainier’s wedding in 1956, Heidi Klum and Tom Kaulitz in 2019 and Jackie’s wedding reception to Aristotle.

The likes of Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, John F Kennedy and Winston Churchill were also guests on the luxury yacht over the years.

Christina O was completely gutted during her most recent refit and accommodates 34 guests in 17 staterooms.

The superyacht is available for charter via Morley Yachts acting as her central agent. During the peak season, the pricing starts from €630,000 per week (with €560,000 a week in the low season).

Although the royals are not known to have travelled on Christina O, it will have acted as a great alternative for filming scenes designed to look as though they were aboard Charles’ favourite yacht, Alexandra – owned the billionaire Greek shipping magnate families, the Latsis.

The royals enjoyed several trips on the 400ft yacht Alexander – which boasts Turkish baths, chandeliered ballroom, private cinema and disco.

‘It is my privilege and honour to be joining this masterful series, which has had me absolutely hooked from episode one.’

The final two series of The Crown will cover the Royal Family’s history throughout the 1990s and into 2003, however it is not yet know which moments will be seen.

There are several poignant moments which could be used, including the Queen making a speech on her 40th anniversary of her accession in 1992, in which she called the year an ‘annus horriblis’.
