This Woman Quit Her Job at Walmart During Orientation

Published

on

In what might be the fastest time ever for quitting a job, one woman left during her orientation. She didn’t wait for the company to treat her poorly.

I’ve always been good at holding onto jobs. Yes, I’m a hard worker, but a lot of it has to do with the fact that I’m an only child who grew up depending on myself to get things done. When some people picture an only child, they imagine a lone weirdo in a bedroom using their mother’s makeup to paint a clown face. That does happen.

What they probably don’t consider, is how a life of solitude can build strength, character, and a fear of failing. Beyond being an insufferable try-hard, it’s that fear that keeps me going. I’m fueled by phobia. Incidentally, fueled by phobia would be an excellent name for a memoir. It’s this anxiety that prevents me from understanding how one woman on TikTok could quit her job halfway through the orientation. She must have siblings. This is big sibling energy.

A woman quit a job before even making it through orientation.

She appears to be relatively young, although the older I get the harder it is to tell a person’s age. I know Matthew McConaughey’s character from Dazed and Confused disgustingly said he keeps getting older but girls stay the same age, but I just keep getting older. Period. I have no idea what anyone else is doing. I’m very busy aging.

The vibe Emma gives off in her TikTok journey is that her life is a little hectic. In one video, Emma is in the hospital after getting shot in her foot. That’s also the day she found she was five weeks pregnant. That’s a lot to handle!

Article continues below advertisement

In September 2023, Emma turned 21 and by the looks of it, she has already lived a lot of life. Her son was almost one, and she was lifeguarding at a community pool. Other than the occasional video about changing up her hair, little is known about Emma until one fateful day when she decided to stand up against corporate America.

Standing in her home while wearing a Walmart vest, Emma recorded a TikTok barely detailing how she just quit during orientation. It wasn’t the prospect of standing in an aisle while fluorescent lights sucked out her will to live, it was what was being offered.

Walmart wanted Emma, a young single mother, to work a 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. shift, five nights a week. This wasn’t a knee-jerk reaction. Emma first asked if she could switch departments. This request was denied.

Emma isn’t the only one who has had a less than ideal working experience with Walmart. “They wanted me to do electronics 2-11 for $12 an hour full-time,” wrote Niyah in the comments. “I never went back.”

Nat busted into the comments section, Kool-Aide man style, with real-life experience working the shift Emma was supposed to work. “I’m a year into my 2-11 cashier position. Did I make a mistake y’all,” he asked with the resignation that comes from a much older person. Life sure is lifeing.

As a much older person, I would like to offer some unsolicited advice. Figure out something you’d like to do and work your way towards that. Obviously Emma’s schedule is restricted by her son but if I were her, I would take the first job that fits. Then, I would map out a path to something a little better and so on and so forth, until you land in a place where you want to be.

Why Did Amazon Drop Venmo? Tech Giant Hasn’t Explained

Published

on

Amazon will no longer accept Venmo as a payment option starting in January 2024. Why has Amazon decided to drop the payment service?

Source: Getty Images

The Gist:

  • Amazon announced that it will no longer be accepting Venmo as a payment method for purchases beginning on Jan. 10, 2024.
  • The tech giant hasn’t explained its decision, but some have speculated that Venmo wasn’t a secure enough payment platform to partner with Amazon.
  • Amazon will still take payment from Venmo debit and credit cards.

Article continues below advertisement

Although Amazon offers its users many things, one of the things it prizes most is convenience. You can order things quickly, and they’ll ship to you almost immediately. Another way that the tech giant has maximized convenience is by allowing you to pay for goods in a huge variety of different ways.

Recently, though, Amazon announced that it will no longer be accepting payments through Venmo starting early in 2024. Now, many want to know why Amazon decided to stop accepting Venmo payments. Keep reading for all of the details.

Why did Amazon drop Venmo?

In Amazon’s announcement that it will no longer be accepting Venmo payments, the company didn’t explain its decision. The tech giant did emphasize that there are still many ways for users to pay for orders, including using a credit card and through Apple Pay.

Amazon said that the change would be effective on Jan. 10, 2024, and that users would have to switch their payment method before then.

Article continues below advertisement

The company placed a particular emphasis on any subscriptions that might be tied to a Venmo account, as those will be charged automatically and be rejected if the payment information isn’t updated.

Also, Amazon clarified that while payments from Venmo itself will be banned, payments from Venmo credit cards or debit cards will still be allowed, just like most other major credit cards.

Because Amazon hasn’t explained its decision, all the public can do is speculate about why it may have decided to ban Venmo. Amazon might be launching some sort of rival service, and it wants to preemptively remove Venmo so that users will have to sign up for its service instead. Ultimately, though, we won’t know for sure until Amazon decides to explain the decision.

Some think that people were using Venmo to scam Amazon.

Another potential reason that Venmo payments are no longer allowed is that Venmo wasn’t a safe enough payment platform, which meant that some users were able to use it to orchestrate scams.

Venmo was created largely to allow people who knew one another to directly transfer cash back and forth without an intermediary like a bank. It wasn’t designed to be used as payment for larger companies.

Although services like Venmo have some pretty obvious perks, there are also some downsides when it comes to things like security. Amazon is one of the largest retailers in the world, and that obviously means that it wants its marketplace to be a safe place for buyers and sellers to do business, even if that means that people who pay with Venmo are out of luck.

Delivery Driver Ruins Christmas

Published

A dad and his two kids are going viral on TikTok after they accidentally saw a Christmas gift on their doorstep, ruining the surprise.

There’s something undeniably magical about Christmas, especially when you’re a kid and you get to wake up in the morning and see the gifts that Santa brought you in the middle of the night.

You thank your parents for allowing the jolly, large, bearded man to come into your home and hook you up with all of the gifts you’ve been begging them to get you.

Article continues below advertisement

You don’t question the economics of how Santa manages to make deals with companies from across the globe that are at the top of their respective industries. Nor do you really care about how one man is able to make so many deliveries in a single night or how he gets into houses without chimneys.

You just know that there’s no better feeling than tearing open that wrapping paper and seeing that special gift you’ve been thinking about for a long time.

And even if you don’t believe in Santa Clause or that Elves are making handshake deals with Japanese gaming companies to manufacture Nintendo Switches, you can still enjoy that element of surprise.

That is, unless an ill-timed delivery ruins the magic for you, which is what happened to this family in a viral TikTok and it looks like their doorbell camera recorded the entire thing.

TikToker @frankpappalardo writes in a text overlay of the clip: “The problem with ordering online when you have kids…”

In the clip, a dad can be seen coming home with his two daughters — it looks like they were picked up from school. And what was waiting for them? A giant box containing a toy that one his kids was really, really excited about.

Unsure of how to cover up the fact that the big Christmas surprise was effectively ruined at that moment, he stammers through some excuses that even the most gullible of children probably wouldn’t believe.

It’s hilarious to see him react in real-time, cussing up a storm and trying to convince the girls that they didn’t see the gifts or that it actually wasn’t for them but for someone else, but those kids seemed to know what was up.

Which means that they’ll have to play the waiting game until Christmas when they can finally open the gift.

It’s difficult to not wonder though: was he not receiving email updates about the status of his delivery? If it was delivered from Amazon he should’ve received a notification that it was delivered.

Or perhaps the source of his ire was the fact that he left specific instructions about the delivery, or maybe he just thought that the gift would’ve been delivered in a box and not just, you know, left out in the open for everyone in the world to see what he purchased?

He hints as much in the video, and it’s not that difficult to understand his frustration: it’s not like you get a Playstation 5 delivered to your house and the parcel service simply leaves the box on your front doorstep, unless it’s wrapped up in a different package.

What do you think? Is this on whoever delivered the package? Or should dad have been more proactive in monitoring when the packages were coming to the house and not assumed that there was going to be a box big enough to fit the large gift that he ordered for Christmas?

What Happened to Genie Wiley? Most Abused Child in History

Published

on

Genie Wiley’s story is widely known as she was the most abused child in history. But little is known about her whereabouts — what happened to her?

The Gist:

  • Genie Wiley is considered the most abused child in history.
  • Discovered at 13 years old, Genie became a subject of language and cognitive development studies. Despite progress, she struggled with communication and faced challenges after the study.
  • Post-experiment, Genie’s life took a tragic turn in foster care. Experiencing further abuse, she regressed into silence, and her current whereabouts are unknown.

Article continues below advertisement

Some scientific cases might ring a bell to the average citizen — Pavlov’s dog (bell-ringing pun intended), Schrodinger’s cat, and the Stanford prison experiment are just a few of those mainstream experiments. But the story of Genie Wiley was also circulated for decades as she provided a unique opportunity for scientists.

Genie, a fake name given to protect her identity, is often considered the most abused child in history. Because of this, when she was discovered, she could barely walk, chew, or use the toilet. Most importantly, she couldn’t communicate at all. Scientists used her to study language and cognitive development, but the story doesn’t have such a happy ending. So, what happened to Genie Wiley?

Genie Wiley was extremely abused in her childhood.

Genie was born in April 1957 in Los Angeles, Calif. to an abusive father and a mother who couldn’t defend her. Genie’s mother, Irene, suffered from cataracts, which caused near-blindness and led her to fearfully depend on her husband, Clark. He was considered an abusive psychopath. His mother died when he was younger in a hit-and-run, after which he displayed psychopathic tendencies.

Of the four children Irene and Clark had, one died due to birth complications, one died as an infant locked in a cold garage, and the other two were Genie and her older brother, John. John was essentially Genie’s only caretaker. He fed her baby food, cereal, and milk at the instruction of his father, whom he also greatly feared. John wasn’t allowed to speak to Genie.

During the day, Clark harnessed Genie naked to a toilet seat. If she made any sounds, he would beat her with wood. He only barked and growled at her, so Genie rarely heard anyone speak. At night, Genie was straitjacketed inside of a wire-mesh “crib” — essentially a cage.

Genie’s existence was discovered when Irene took her outside when Clark ran out for groceries. Irene was seeking a cure for her blindness and thought she walked into a blindness disability benefits office, but she instead went to social services. The social workers immediately noticed Genie’s strange behavior — her gait mimicked that of a rabbit, she drooled, was incontinent, and looked to be about 7 years old when she was actually 13.

Article continues below advertisement

Genie Wiley was “saved” by the social workers, but her whereabouts now are unknown.

At that point, Irene and Clark were arrested for child abuse, although Irene was released on account of being a victim as well. Clark took his own life at 70 years old just before he was due in court. His suicide note just said, “The world will never understand.” No, we won’t!

Genie was raised by doctors, psychologists, therapists, and more, from 1970 to 1975. She was admitted to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, which applied for a grant to study her. Because withholding a proper childhood would be unethical, Genie’s case was a rare opportunity to study the possibilities of learning linguistics after early childhood.

She quickly learned basic skills, like going to the toilet and dressing herself, but she was never able to excel beyond stringing two to three words together at a time. And she never grasped grammatical concepts, despite linguists’ hard work to teach her. She was fostered by researcher and psychologist David Rigler and his wife, Marilyn, until 1975. At this point, Genie was about 18 years old and the grant had been revoked.

Genie was forced to move back in with her mother, who wasn’t able to care for her, so she went into the foster care system. This led to more abuse and Genie regressed and didn’t speak, although she was still able to communicate nonverbally. Now, however, it’s unknown where Genie is and if she’s still alive.

On her 27th and 29th birthdays, psychiatrist Jay Shurley said that Genie was “largely silent, depressed, and chronically institutionalized,” according to Very Well Mind. In 2000, a private investigator found that Genie was reportedly living in an adult care facility and was “happy.” Now, there’s no record of where she is, but if she’s still alive, she would be 66 years old.
