UPS Driver Explains How Much They’ll Really Make With the $170,000 Pay Increase

Published

on

A UPS driver on TikTok explains the new $170,000 pay increase that drivers will be eligible for following the ratification of a new union deal.

A UPS driver broke down how much they actually make from their $170,000 payment package.

The summer of 2023 saw a number of notable strikes start taking place throughout the country. The most famous of which that you’ve probably heard of are the simultaneous WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike, in which Hollywood writers and actors decided to halt production on several high-profile projects as a protest against CEOs for streaming residual pay and protections against AI infringements on intellectual property. Amid this, UPS just managed to avoid having to strike.

During the summer, the long-running unionized package delivery service worked together with teamsters over the course of several weeks to reach a new contract for over 340,000 union workers. The deal allowed all parties to narrowly avoid a strike that would have halted package shipments all over the country.

UPS drivers are now eligible to earn up to $170,000 a year, including perks.

As folks on social media boasted that UPS drivers and workers stand to earn up to $170,000 a year, an actual UPS driver took to TikTok to explain the actual logistics behind the pay increase.

Skyler on TikTok (@skylerleestutzman) is a professional UPS driver who is active on the platform. In a stitch with another TikTok in which a user boasts about the UPS deal where workers can earn up to $170,000 a year, Skyler tries to clear the air about what the deal actually means for UPS workers. Spoiler alert: They’re not actually making that much.

Under the old contract, UPS drivers were paid $41.51 an hour.

“This is gonna take longer than a minute to explain, so let’s go about this the right way,” Skyler declares in his video as he logs in his break.

“Under our current contract, our wage is currently $41.51 an hour,” he explains.

That’s jumping up to $44.26 an hour, or $92,000 a year.

With the new deal, that pay is bumped up to $44.26 an hour. According to Skyler, that amounts to about $92,000 a year, which is still nothing to sneeze at. Of course, that doesn’t yet account for overtime or benefits.

The “$170,000 a year” that’s gotten people so excited also factors in benefits like medical insurance and hourly pay that goes toward pensions. As far as the pension is concerned, that pay can amount to another $25,000.

The rest of the $170,000 figure comes from benefits, including medical care.

He doesn’t share specifics on how medical benefits count toward the deal, but he does make the bold claim that “it would actually take about a $170,000 a year job to replace this one for me.”

He ends his informational TikTok by professing that while the media might be blowing the deal a little out of proportion, the new contract is still an enormous win for union workers.

“[The media is] really not that far off of how amazing it is to work for this company,” he says.

Unsurprisingly, commenters were impressed by the new pay package.

Folks in the comments were still wildly impressed with what UPS workers managed to achieve with these negotiations.

“I’m glad they are getting a livable wage,” one person commented. “Everyone that works 40 hours a week should have enough to live on and have some fun.”

While another user explained why there could be so much debate around the situation: “Sounds like it’s overpaid but the truth is everything is underpaid so makes us feel off.”

Another user asked: “Why would anyone be upset that a workforce is being treated properly? What is wrong with these people?”

Another concluded: “If you’re making less in another field and upset, don’t bring these workers down, find out why your field isn’t willing to offer you a livable wage!”

What do you think?

Other companies and corporations would do well to value their unions the way UPS has, especially when it comes to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. In response to fairer wages and job security for actors and writers, studio executives working against the ongoing Hollywood strikes have previously stated that they are willing to wait until union members start “losing their apartments and losing their houses” before striking a fair deal.

UPS managed to avoid such a catastrophe before a large-scale strike could affect the industry at large. Studio executives, take note. This is how the people providing your success should be treated.

  • He played for more than 20 years with the Baltimore Orioles and was an All-Star 18 times over.

Baltimore Orioles fans have a lot to celebrate this year as their team appears to be playoff bound, but now, that joy has been tempered by the news that Brooks Robinson, a legend for the team, has died at the age of 86. Brooks spent his entire 23-year career with the Orioles, and was an All-Star in 18 separate seasons for the team.

Brooks is widely recognized as one of the greatest defensive third basemen to ever play the sport, and his number was retired by the Orioles in 1978. He earned the nickname “Mr. Oriole,” and those who followed the game when he played or even just heard stories about him likely know how much he meant to Baltimore fans.

What was Brooks Robinson’s cause of death?

Following the news of his death on Sept. 26, 2023, many naturally wondered what Brooks’s cause of death was.

His death was first announced by the Orioles in a joint statement with his family.

“We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Brooks Robinson,” the statement read. “An integral part of our Orioles Family since 1955, he will continue to leave a lasting impact on our club, our community, and the sport of baseball.”

No cause of death was listed as part of that statement, but Brooks had faced a number of health challenges in the later years of his life. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009, and had to have surgery in 2021 to repair a broken arm.

For now, though, his exact cause of death remains unknown, and will likely be the subject of some speculation following the news of his death.

What requires no speculation, though, is the legacy Brooks established on the field. The high watermark of his career may have come in 1970 during the World Series, when his excellent play on both sides of the ball helped the team beat the Reds in five games to take home the title. Few players have had a greater impact on the sport in general or on the team they played for in particular.

Our prayers are with Brooks’s family, friends, and fans during this time.

This baby was fussy with her aunt — until she heard her deceased mom’s heartbeat in her favorite teddy bear. And we’re all in tears.

Losing a loved one is an inevitable part of this funny thing called life. No matter how old or young you may be, no one is immune to grief. Everyone can agree that no parent should ever have to bury their child. On the other hand, when a parent is laid to rest, we can just chalk it up to the circle of life.

It’s hard to say that when it comes to this poor baby, whose mom died suddenly. While the baby girl sadly will never get to know her mother, what she does have, however, is an auntie who does whatever it takes to preserve her sister’s memory.

In a now-viral video on TikTok, the baby was visibly upset. It was then that her aunt came to the rescue with a stuffed animal. But not just any stuffed animal — this one plays a recording of her mama’s heartbeat.

This baby calmed down when she heard her deceased mom’s heartbeat in a teddy bear.

While social media is good for jokes and fun times, it also documents some heartbreaking moments. Let’s take Lula Smith’s (@lulasmith65) viral TikTok video. In it, she’s holding her niece whose mother died months earlier.

The baby is fussy until Auntie saves the day with her favorite stuffed animal.

“She cries because she wants her bear,” Lula says in the video. Lo and behold, she was right. She pressed the bear, which started playing a heartbeat. The baby calmed down and fell asleep within a matter of seconds.

Heartbeat teddy bears are trending — here’s what you need to know.

Lula’s video was a perfect example of how you can use heartbeat teddy bears from Build-a-Bear or even your local ultrasound tech. A search on TikTok reveals that plenty of other people have had the same idea.

While some parents get a recording of their child’s heartbeat in a teddy bear as a keepsake, others use them to cope with loss. This mom gave birth to twin girls but only one survived. She was able to use the heartbeat teddy bear to commemorate her deceased daughter on what would have been the twin’s first birthday.

Lula started a GoFundMe for the baby and her four siblings.

On a GoFundMe page launched by Lula in April 2023, she explained the circumstances under which she gained custody of her sister’s daughter. The baby’s mom apparently died of an asthma attack.

“She was a 29-year-old mother with five kids,” Lula said of her sister. She asked for donations toward the funeral expenses and supporting her sister’s children, who were all under the age of 12 when their mom died. “My sister Kahlilah (Mina) did not have life insurance. Putting my pride to the side and finally asking for help.”

Lula added, “This was unexpected for us all. I’m praying for better days to come. For her children and us. Never in a million years I would think an asthma attack would take her from us. I don’t know how we going to do any of this.”

Thanks to her now-viral video, Lula and the kids will hopefully get help during this very difficult time in their lives. If you want to lend a hand, you can donate to the GoFundMe account.

Dog Park Karen Can’t Control Her Unleashed Dog at the Park

Published

on

When a woman’s unleashed dog went after another dog, said woman blamed the owners of the dog under attack. That’s not how that works.

I have absolutely been guilty of walking outside with my dog, sans leash. I have zero excuses for it, but I do have a couple of reasons. First of all, my dog Lorraine is quite timid and small. The only thing she has ever gone after is a piece of food I’ve accidentally dropped. Suddenly she’s Indiana Bones looking for the Bark of the Covenant.

Article continues below advertisement

Secondly, she’s very strange and hates leashes. I don’t know why this is. I adopted her like that. When I get out a leash, she runs away from me. Putting on her harness yields a dramatic response that could get her an Academy Award. It’s madness. I now understand that using a leash is as much for my dog’s safety as it is for others. Clearly not everyone understands this as noted by a TikTok of a woman blaming other people for her unleashed dog’s attack. Ma’am, the call is coming from inside the house.

Can anyone ever really know dogs?

Xinyu Fang’s TikTok account, @laurentfong, is filled with videos of her gorgeous Samoyed dogs. These dogs are so fluffy and adorable, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jim Henson himself created the breed.

The Fang family lives in a full house with two Samoyeds and at least three cats. By all accounts, the Samoyed dogs get along beautifully with other animals, as noted by a deeply cute video here one of them is rolling around in the mud with another dog. It’s giving Woodstock ’94 and the headliner is Red Hot Chili Dogs.

Article continues below advertisement

Sadly, sometimes things can take a turn which is what happened to Xinyu while at the park with the dogs. She documented an attack on one of the dogs by a retriever who was off its leash.

Article continues below advertisement

Thankfully the attack did look to be more playful than dangerous but when you’re in the moment, it’s hard to assess the situation. One of the Samoyeds is being held by a man who is turning around and around, in an effort to keep it away from the Golden Retriever.

It looks as if the retriever gets at least one nip in before its owner rushes over. Although at the risk of making light of this situation, the Samoyed has so much hair that it’s possible the retriever got a mouthful of hair, not skin. I sure hope so!

Article continues below advertisement

The Samoyed looks shocked while the other tries to join in which makes me believe the retriever is just playing. It’s hopping up and down with excitement. Perhaps the situation escalated because the owners became tense and the dogs could sense that. It’s understandable why they would. They are sensitive! I always have to be aware of my emotions around my dog. Dogs do pick things up and Lorraine and I are very codependent and grossly in love.

When the retriever’s owner appears, she yells, “You guys just don’t understand dogs.” Unless that woman is a dog trainer, and she may very well be, what she probably means is they Samoyed owners don’t understand her dog.

The comments section provided some fascinating insight into dogs. One person said they used to manage a dog daycare, and Golden Retrievers started the most fights. As much as I appreciate anecdotal evidence, I needed more proof than one person in the comments.

Article continues below advertisement

According to Pet Keen dot com, a website whose “writing team includes practicing veterinarians and vet technicians, animal trainers specializing in animal psychology, and people who are passionate about the well-being of animals, big and small,” Golden Retrievers are not aggressive at all! If aggression appears, there has to be a reason. Again I say, it looks like that dog was just playing.

Another TikToker commented that Samoyeds are famously friendly. It turns out they are extremely personable, says Hill’s Pet dot com. They also get along great with other dogs but are “herding dogs and may show some tendency to chase or nip.” Oh now that’s interesting. Could one of the Samoyeds have been in herding mode? We can’t say because the video starts mid-attack. Regardless, please always put your dogs on a leash!
