Use these seven words to terrify literally every anime fan ever: “Live-action adaptation of [insert beloved anime here].” That alone would be enough to chill the spines of any anime enthusiast. After all, adaptations of this nature — especially ones made in Hollywood — have been historically poorly received as shallow interpretations of the source material. The decades-long streak of ill-remembered live-action adaptations of anime was enough to give everyone pause when One Piece was announced to be getting the same treatment.

The series premiered on Aug. 31 and adapts the long-running story of Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) as he gathers up a ragtag pirate crew to set sell on the endless sea in search of the fabled One Piece treasure in order to become King of the Pirates.

With an enormous legacy beloved by fans around the world, many balked at the idea of a live-action adaptation. Now that the series is out on Netflix, what do people think? Let’s take a look at some of their reactions.

Check out folks’ reactions to the live-action ‘One Piece’ series.

Coming fresh off the heels of the poorly-received Cowboy Bebop live-action series on Netflix, One Piece hopes to leave a better impression as it seeks to adapt one of the most popular manga franchises in anime history.

It has a lot riding on it, to be sure, but there seems to have been a lot of heart put into its production. In fact, original manga author Eiichiro Oda personally oversaw filming as executive producer to ensure that the show remained true to the source material while coming into its own.

What’s the final verdict so far? Well, the series currently has a 79 percent critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is an astonishing leap from previous adaptations of this nature. As for the audience score, the series fared even better with a 94 percent! To everyone’s surprise, there’s no love lost for the live-action Straw Hat Crew. But RT scores only tell us so much. Here’s what people are actually saying about the show.

Canadian anime critic Geoff Thew aka Mother’s Basement had high praises for the first episode of the series.

On Twitter, he wrote, “Gags on point. Set, costume, and prop design consistently phenomenal. Every fight scene is a new kind of banger. Iñaki simply is Luffy.”

Folks on TikTok have also had shockingly nice things to say about the series. In one video, which compared fans’ negative reactions to the series’ announcement back in 2021 to the final result of the show, plenty of folks commented with praise for the show.

One fan claims, “It officially broke the curse that’s been hanging over the US for years.”

Of course, not everyone is a fan of the series, which is to be expected when it adapts a show as prolific and successful as One Piece. One point of contention seems to be the action sequences of the show. One person called the fight scenes “terrible” and claimed that “it feels like a fanmade YouTube live-action [show].

By and large, however, more people seem to enjoy the show than not. Folks on TikTok continue to praise the performances for each of the main cast. Not only that, but fans are having an immense amount of fun seeing these new versions play off each other with some clever dialogue and production value that hold the source material in high regard.

For what many believe to be the first time, a Western-produced live-action adaptation of a popular anime has defied all expectations to be not just good, but absolutely loved by fans of the original. The first season of the live-action One Piece series is now streaming exclusively on Netflix.

What Happened to Ylvis? Fans Fear Viral Singer Is Dead

Published

on

After a clip and stills of Norwegian singer Bard (from the duo Ylvis) laying down in a coffin circulated the web, folks wanted to know what happened.

The Gist

  • Rumors circulated online in November 2023 that Bård Ylvisåker from the duo Ylvis — of “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)” viral fame — passed away.
  • Folks who saw a VGTV televised “funeral” for the singer, which shows him laying down in a casket, led many to believe he was dead.
  • Singer Maria Mena led a choir in a slowed-down and sad performance of the viral hit track.
  • Bård is not dead, however, and the video was just indeed a staged performance.

The phenomenon of viral one-hit wonders from artists who seemingly come out of nowhere and gain massive popularity on the internet are an interesting phenomenon: for a few weeks (or months, even), these tracks are seemingly everywhere. About a year or two later, playing the track at a party seems like an insult, until the appropriate “throwback” threshold has been reached.

Ylvis (a comedy duo composed of brothers Bård and Vegard Ylvisåker) is one such artist, but fans became worried in November 2023 that Bård may’ve passed away. But what really happened? And what has Ylvis been up to in the years since their hit 2013 track?

What happened to Ylvis?

And while neither Mena or any of the other singers ever once cracks a smile throughout the performance, the same can’t be said for the folks who were in attendance for the artist’s funeral.

Which probably means one of the following:

  • (A) A few people at the funeral who were happy to see the singer dead
  • (B) A testament to how much of a bop “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?) is
  • (C) Norwegians either have strange funeral customs or a sick sense of humor
  • (D) The funeral was staged, Bård is still alive, and the video was a bit of dark humor in action

Of course one could add to the final aforementioned multiple choice selection that Ylvis could be making a wider statement on the life cycle of viral one-hit wonder tracks in general.

Article continues below advertisement

Bård is indeed still among the living; after the performance, he even stood up, exited the coffin, and conducted an interview afterward.

While it’s difficult to imagine that anyone would see the video and so many of the laughing folks watching and recording the performance, and think that Bård legitimately died, there are some images that could’ve been lifted from the video that would lead folks to think he actually passed away.

And it wouldn’t be just pictures of him in his coffin that could convince folks he died; Marina Mena shared some photos in a multi-picture Instagram upload that shows just how far the video production went to replicate the look and feel of a legitimate funeral.

In her post, she features a snapshot of a memoriam pamphlet showing Bård’s face along with his birth and fake death year and in another photo she’s holding up the same exact image on a funeral portrait style painting.

Again, however, the jovial nature of the other pictures in the post don’t exactly scream “rest in peace.”

What is Ylvis of “What Does the Fox Say” fame doing now?

After their 2013 mega-hit, the brothers continued to put out music, releasing their first album in 2014. They also continued to appear on Norwegian TV (where they first grew to fame) and even released a documentary series in 2018 that took stories from Norwegian news and turned them into musicals. And in 2022, they began making content for VGTV.

The guys also post a slew of funny social media posts, interspersed with clips of musical performances, and even some extended love for the track that was a global phenomenon. A great example would be the somber instrumental version of “The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)” set to this brilliant clip of a lost McDonald’s cheeseburger’s globe-trotting journey back home to their McFamily.

So while yes, viral songs, just like many popular songs, can certainly become annoying after a while, Ylvis seems to be demonstrating a certain amount of gratitude for what they’re most known for while also displaying a stalwart ability to stick to a bit.

October 2023: Joshua Jackson and Lupita Nyong’o first popped up together at a Janelle Monáe concert.

In October 2023, the former teen heartthrob and the Black Panther star were first spotted at a Janelle Monáe concert in Los Angeles, but fans weren’t sure what to make of the outing, since they were with a group of friends, per People.

We’ll get to the interesting timing of the event in a moment, but first, the two would seemingly soon confirm that they are dating when Joshua and Lupita were seen running errands together in early December, also in Los Angeles.

Finally, on Dec. 5, Joshua and Lupita were photographed hand-in-hand in Joshua Tree, Calif., putting speculation to rest that they are indeed together after ending their respective previous relationships.

But by October 2023, Joshua and Jodie were done with happily ever after, with the actor’s wife filing for divorce and citing “irreconcilable differences.”

Sources even speculated that the union had grown “unhealthy.”

Someone who talked to People said about the couple who is no longer, “They are on very different paths in life. It turned into an unhealthy marriage that made her unhappy.”

Meanwhile, Lupita was with a partner and ended things on similarly cringeworthy terms. Perhaps the two A-listers bonded over their shared experiences getting out of toxic relationships?

Lupita Nyong’o and her ex went their separate ways in October 2023.

Lupita dated her boyfriend Selema Masekela for about a year before things went way sour for the couple.

The star announced the couple’s bad breakup on social media, sharing in October 2023, “At this moment, it is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust. I find myself in a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception.”

Ouch!

As for how serious things will get between Joshua and Lupita, well, for now other than the photos of the two holding hands, neither has confirmed the relationship or commented publicly on their feelings for one another.

We’ll have to wait and see if this is more than just a rebound — but is it bad if we really hope so?

What Does an Amish Oil Change Mean on TikTok? Two Meanings

Published

on

An “Amish oil change” is the latest term spreading around TikTok, but many are unclear on the meaning behind the phrase and what it refers to.

Source: Getty Images

The Gist:

  • The term “Amish oil change” has been circulating on TikTok recently, and it has two definitions that are nasty in different ways.
  • The first involves a procedure that ensures that a horse has regular bowel movements, and the second involves performing a sexual act on the animal.
  • Frankly, we would encourage you to avoid trying either definition on your own if you can avoid it.

While there are plenty of people who know how to change the oil in their cars, even those who are particularly good with cars may be confused by the idea of an Amish oil change. The phrase, which has trended on TikTok, seems to be a paradoxical take on the phase. After all, the Amish quite famously don’t drive cars.

Although the idea of an Amish oil change predates the internet, the phrase has become much more well known in large part thanks to its appearance on TikTok. Now, many people want to know what it means.

What is an Amish oil change on TikTok?

In a car, oil changes are a necessary part of maintenance. If you don’t change the oil in your car regularly, it won’t work anymore.

The same is true for horses, who are living beings in their own right. They’re also key to many people’s livelihoods, including the Amish. Just like cars, horses need to be taken care of if you want them to carry you from place to place like the Amish do. The Amish also use horses to plow fields instead of using big machinery.

An Amish oil change refers to a particularly nasty procedure that anyone, Amish or not, who has a horse may have had to do at some point. If a horse is sick and hasn’t been pooping regularly, its caretakers may have to put on a glove that goes all the way up to their shoulder. They reach into the horse’s rear end and unblock it so that it can once again have regular bowel movements.

Suddenly, the dirt required to change the oil on your car doesn’t seem too bad. For many non-Amish horse owners, they would call a veterinarian to come out and treat the horse — Amish oil change included. Although the Amish likely take care of a blockage themselves, most horse owners will pay a professional.

The term “Amish oil change” came about because it’s a little bit like changing the oil on your car.

It’s a fairly clever turn of phrase that describes a pretty nasty part of animal care. Still, if you’re someone who works with horses regularly, you’re likely familiar with how gross the work can be at times.

Urban Dictionary has an even grosser definition of the term.

If you’ve seen the term on TikTok, the definition explained above might be the one being used, but it’s also possible that an even grosser definition is the one you’re seeing.

According to Urban Dictionary, an Amish oil change is “when a woman performs Fellatio on a horse and spits the cum out.”

Welp. Frankly, the less said about that particular definition of the term, the better.
