Why Does Tennis Scoring Go 15, 30, 40?

Published

on

Tennis scorekeeping has always been weird. Why does it go from 15 to 30 to 40 anyway? Sports historians have come up with several theories.

Sports have always had weird rules and terminology. Football has a line of scrimmage that even seasoned fans may have difficulty really explaining. More people recognize reaching bases as dating lingo rather than as part of baseball rules. And the extent of knowledge that the average person has about basketball may likely amount to knowing how to dribble a ball. But of all the sports with confusing and baffling rules and jargon, tennis stands above them all.

You might think there wouldn’t be much to worry about with a game of two to four people hitting the same ball at each other while trying to stay in bounds. Heck, it’s not as if volleyball — which is remarkably similar to tennis — has too many complexities to wrap your head around. But tennis has so many rules and strange conventions that one would be forgiven if one couldn’t understand all of it. For instance, why is the score tracked by 15, 30, then 40? There are actually several theories.

Why is tennis scored by 15, 30, 40?

The basic rules of tennis are simple enough. Two players hit the ball back and forth in an effort to make sure their opponent misses the ball as it bounces out of the field. But unlike its virtual successor in Pong, you don’t score a straight-up point just by getting the ball past the other person. You have to win individual sets to get onto the scoreboard. Those sets are won through a scoring system where players reach 15, then 30, then 40 every time they get the ball out.

Once they get the ball out past 40 (barring any deadlocks or advantage points), they officially win the set and technically, earn a point from there.

But where did a scoring convention like this even originate? Based on our research, not even tennis historians have a clear answer. What we do know is that this system has been in place since the 15th century. According to The Tennis Bros, French tennis games already employed this system during the 1400s.

As for where the system came from, there is one theory that has been circulated among tennis enthusiasts. This theory suggests that early games of tennis had their scores displayed on giant clocks. The “clock hands” would be moved a full quarter every time a player scored, hitting the “15,” “30,” and “45” marks with each volley. Once it went all the way around for one player, the set would go to them. It certainly sounds plausible, even though we now use “40” instead of “45”.

However, a report by Time magazine indicated that minute hands on clocks were only introduced in the late 1500s, which doesn’t necessarily line up with the timeline of tennis’ existence.

Still, the “clock hands” theory remains one of the most prominent explanations for tennis’ weird scoring system. Now if only someone could explain “love”.

In 2015, budding professional boxer Terrel Williams took on the then-undefeated super-welterweight Prichard Colón in an infamous bout that changed his (and Prichard’s) life forever. The match started out like any other fight, but things started getting ugly once Terrel started throwing illegal punches to the back of Prichard’s head.

The trauma to Prichard’s head caused internal bleeding, and after collapsing in the dressing room, the up-and-coming boxer remained in a coma for 221 days. Thankfully, he survived, but his life will never be the same. As of now, Prichard receives physical therapy and uses a motorized wheelchair and a communication device.

Since then, many have expressed their distaste for Terrel Williams and his dirty fighting — but has he ever addressed the devastating situation? Did he ever apologize to Prichard? Read on to find out.

“I pray for Prichard every day,” he disclosed to The Ring in 2018. “That’s never going to change. I wish him nothing but peace and health. No one wants what happened to Prichard to happen to anybody. … I would never intentionally harm someone like that.”

In an unexpected turn of events, Terrel claimed that he “didn’t do anything wrong that night,” adding, “Prichard was a young man with a bright future, who was going to contribute good things to the world. That’s been hard on me.”

“I don’t place any blame on myself. I prayed about it. I wish the young man really well,” he stated.

“But there has been a lot of malicious stuff that’s being said about me, especially from the Colón family. If that is how they’re going to cope with it, and it helps them heal, then that’s what it is,” he said. “I’m still healing too. I’ll be healing for the rest of my life. I honestly never wanted to fight again after that fight.”

Terrel continued, “It’s a hard situation on me and a hard situation on the Colón family. We were in a hard, tough fight. Things happen in boxing. It’s a contact sport. Do I wish that had happened to Colón? Of course not! I’m a man of faith, and I know I’m a good man. I pray, and I may not have all of the answers, but I am walking in the right path. One thing I won’t do is question God. Things happen.”

As of 2023, Prichard Colón’s speech has not returned.

In May 2017, Prichard’s parents filed a lawsuit seeking more than $50 million in damages from the ringside doctor and the two event promoters. The lawsuit has not yet been settled, and in 2019, the former boxer’s mother, Niéves Colón, believes it may never be settled.

Another day, another beef in hip-hop to explore. Fans of Drake and Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club are aware that the Toronto native has had beef with morning show co-host Charlamagne Tha God. In the past, Charlamagne has been vocal about his belief that Drake “sings too much” while also questioning his sexuality.

That said, in 2015, the pair seemingly buried their issues after Drake sent Charlamagne bottles of Dom Perignon with a note sharing that he wanted to be friends. Since then, folks thought that all was good between the rapper and the blunt mogul — until now.

It appears that Drake’s truce nearly 10 years ago is now a thing of the past as the beef between him and Charlamagne has reignited. And while fans are picking sides this time around, it appears that the internet is divided about the latest issues between the pair. Here’s the tea on Drake and Charlamagne Tha God’s beef.

Drake felt disrespected by Charlamagne Tha God’s critiques of his song “Slime You Out” featuring SZA.

Erykah Badu once said, “I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my s—.” And it appears that Drake shares the same sentiments when it comes to Charlamagne who had a history of throwing shade at the rapper.

If you’re late to the game, Charlamagne and Andrew Schultz spoke about “Slime You Out” on the Sept. 22, 2023, episode of the Brilliant Idiots podcast. During their chat, Charlamagne had some interesting sentiments about the track that most people were divided on.

“What scares me — and it’s not a scare because Drake’s gonna be fine — Drake put out a song last Friday and… nobody cared,” Charlamagne says. It came out last Friday and people just started talking about the lyrics yesterday.

Charlamagne continued: “That’s not Drake-like. He’s gonna be fine regardless. I think we were looking for something a little more harder, a little more aggressive than this slow joint with SZA.”

Drake quickly clapped back about Charlamagne’s sentiments with some interesting statements and posts on Instagram. The rapper started by calling Charlamagne an “off-brand Morris Chestnut” while captioning photos of the mogul on his Instagram Stories, per Hot New Hip Hop.

“Are you ok Leonard? You kinda weirding me out G,” Drake wrote on Instagram Stories. Like you really obsessed with me or something for years like you look in the mirror and wish you saw my reflection type shit,” he wrote on his Instagram Stories.”

Drake continued: “Whatever you gotta do to let it out I’m sure your 435 loyal fans will stand by you, ya f—king goof.”

Charlamagne Tha God responded to Drake’s statements on the Sept. 25, 2023, broadcast of ‘The Breakfast Club’ with a weird response.

Instead of throwing digs back at Drake, Charlamagne made some interesting statements of his own during “The Rumor Report” segment of The Breakfast Club.

After Charlamagne laughed about Drake’s sentiments, he alleged that his feud with Drake was a ploy for the rapper’s latest music releases.

“I want to tell y’all something, but you’re not gonna believe me because I’m lying, but Drake and I plan this out every time he drops an album,” Charlamagne said. “I’m part of the album rollout. He drops a record, I critique it, it brings more attention to the record, more attention to the project.

He continued: “I keep telling Drake he doesn’t need me to do that; he’s Drake. But for whatever reason, he wants me to do it so I oblige!”

Charlamagne went on to say that back in the day he was hating on Drake just to hate on him out of it being fun. But this time around he’s a marketing tool.

Of course, Charlamagne is known for being sarcastic, which he showcased a bit when making these claims. However, Drizzy has not responded to Charla’s claims since the episode aired.

So, if it is true, Drizzy will likely throw out more jabs in due time.
