Woman Works Serving Job, Earns More Than With Degree

Published

on

A woman on TikTok complains about her serving job in which she apparently earns less than what she should be making with her degree.

Many will argue that finding a job can be just as stressful as having one, and they’d be right. Whether you’re looking to get started on adulting with a salary or you desperately need to get out of a job you’re currently working, we’ve all been in the same trenches when it comes to throwing applications at a wall in the hope that something sticks to a recruiter. It can take an emotional and mental toll on folks when they’re trying to make the money they deserve and just… aren’t.

Most of us understand the sting of being stuck in a position that doesn’t quite match up with the things you planned on doing, but one person on TikTok has had enough. As of this writing, Alison Johnson (@fitnesswithalison) is working a serving job in which she gets paid more money than the jobs she’s qualified for with her degree would pay her. However, her comments have sparked an interesting debate on work experience. Let’s break it down.

A woman on TikTok earns more at her serving job than in positions related to her business degree.

“I have a bone to pick with America,” Alison begins in her TikTok, which was posted in mid-September 2023. At the time of recording, she was on her way to a serving job that she absolutely hates at a sushi restaurant.

She goes on to reveal that she has a business marketing degree that she’d rather use. Unfortunately, according to her, the disparity in salary between both places is “insane”.

“I make more serving sushi rolls because I’ve been applying to marketing jobs for weeks now and the pay cut is insane,” Alison discloses.

She essentially suggests that the jobs that her degree qualifies her for would pay far less than her restaurant job.

However, Alison later references the fact her resume often goes up against other folks with more experience in her field when it comes to better-paying jobs in her area of expertise.

“[I’m an] almost 25-year-old chick going against corporate-ass America [and] people with so much experience.”

She continues, “People say ‘get your degree’, but then they don’t talk about how you need experience. The degree was the experience!”

This is where the conversation takes an interesting turn. Now, I’m sure we’re all familiar with those gas-lighting job posts for entry-level jobs that demand several years of experience and how that is wildly not conducive to the job hunt grind. But Alison’s comments suggesting that earning the degree on its own qualifies you for high-end jobs has given plenty of folks pause.

In the comments section of her video, Alison has some supporters. But others argue that earning a degree doesn’t necessarily equate to job experience. After all, learning how to do something and proving that we can do it are two different things.

“The degree is not the experience,” one TikToker suggested. “You have to start entry level.”

Another person posited, “The degree is a gatekeeper that you have to pass.”

The conversation even continued on Twitter. A marketer with a blue checkmark on the platform (take that for what you will) reposted Alison’s TikTok and called his broke era with $30,000 a year in a tiny shared apartment one of the “most fun times of [his] life.” He did, however, encourage Alison by saying that few people make anywhere close to $200,000 a year at their first job and that “money will come.”

Other people suggested that internships look very nice on a resume and wondered if Alison had any under her belt.

One Twitter user wrote, “I’ve talked to some recent college grads with similar mindsets about the degree equaling experience. For me, most of my experience came from internships.”

This certainly isn’t to say that job postings aren’t guilty of making unreasonable demands of desperate people. On that same note, though, there’s plenty to be said about the difference between education and application.

TikTok user @domioreo, who goes by Domi, recorded the whole incident and posted it on TikTok, imploring people not to leave their kids in cars.

We break down the video below.

A woman calls the police after finding little kids left in a car.

The video takes place in a parking lot with Domi addressing us directly and the words on the screen read, “bro… PLEASE STOP LEAVING YOUR LITTLE CHILDREN IN THE F—— CAR UNATTENDED!!! IT IS DEAD ASFF.”

The video opens with Domi passionately stating, “This is f—— ridiculous… There is a child left in the f—— car. I’m literally right next to the car right now. Left by herself in the f—— car seat.”

Domi explains that it is cold outside, probably only 45 degrees. Domi then notices that there’s another kid in the car as well. While we don’t see the children for privacy reasons, there’s a baby in a car seat as well as a toddler.

Domi tells us that she called 9-1-1 because she isn’t worried about anyone’s kids being taken away. She explains that if the parents were worried about their kids being taken away, then they wouldn’t have left them in the car by themselves.

The police show up and while we don’t see the interaction, we can hear Domi explain the situation to them. She turns the camera around so that we can see the police start to get the kids out of the car.

The video ends with Domi sitting in her car talking directly to the camera and saying that she doesn’t care if anyone calls her a “Karen,” and that she would never leave her kids in the car, “especially with sex trafficking going around.”

Domi also tells us that the dad shows up. He had taken the oldest child, a 14-year-old, into the store with him. He didn’t even know that the toddler was in the car until the police were there. Talk about bad parenting!

The caption for the video reads, “istg idgaf what y’all gotta say innem comments — DO NOT LEAVE UNDERAGED KIDS IN THE CAR ALONE‼️ if you’re under the age of 13, you shouldn’t be in a vehicle unattended. idc how quick your parents run into the store to grab some rice, STOP TS. people dgaf about what you doin’ when they’re breaking windows and kidnapping CHILDREN. STOP THAT S—.”

While Domi was expecting people to call her out for being a Karen, the people in the comments actually support her. One person wrote, “You did the right thing and I’m really proud of you for it,” while another said, “You are NOT a Karen you did the right thing!!!”

We agree with Domi. A lot of people would have seen those kids and have been concerned, but wouldn’t have done anything. She did something, and many people are thankful for her swift action, especially those kids.

  • The Philadelphia Eagles changed the font on their logo in 2022.
  • Fans weren’t pleased with the change.
  • The new logo has a more modern look, but fans prefer the classic font.

Like all NFL teams, the Philadelphia Eagles logo is synonymous with their brand. Established in 1933, the Philadelphia Eagles, hailing from Pennsylvania, have made their mark in the league. The team has won three NFL championships and one Super Bowl trophy. With almost nine decades of football history, the Eagles command a massive and dedicated fan base.

In addition to being known for their boisterous fans, the Eagles logo is iconic. However, the team made some changes to their beloved wordmark. In June 2022, the Philly-based football organization announced that they were changing the font used for their classic logo.

“The Philadelphia Eagles will be adopting and implementing a new, refreshed wordmark,” read a statement from the team, per Philly Voice. “Moving forward, it should replace the old Eagles wordmark in all forms of media and public-facing materials.” The statement explained that the Eagles head, that’s synonymous with the brand, will remain untouched.

For fans of the champion football team, the change came as a shock. Following the announcement, Eagles enthusiasts took to social media to express their concern and question why the change was made in the first place.

The new Eagles logo has a more modern look.

In the previous logo, the word “Eagles” was arched, and featured sharp edges extending from the “E” and “S.” The new logo takes a different approach and has a sleeker design. The “Es” have an inward pointed arrow, but the other letters are untouched. Gone are the shadow and arch that gave the watermark a 3-D appearance. The animated eagle head remains on the team’s logo, although it is now placed above the text.

The Philadelphia Eagles will begin to switch out their player’s jerseys in the 2024 football season, but fans aren’t happy with the change. “So ugly and basic and boring, I don’t want to wear this,” one person tweeted. While another added, “Man they must have done this with their eyes closed.”

The Eagles have made brand changes in the past.

Fans of the Philadelphia Eagles aren’t always opposed to changes made to their beloved team. In March 2022, the team announced the return of their classic kelly green jerseys, which haven’t been worn since 2010. “I’m here to announce that beginning in the 2023 season, we’re going to have the kelly green, classic Eagles jersey and matching helmet and do it the right way,” Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said, per NBC Sports Philadelphia.

Jalen Hurts, Jason Kelce, and the other birds rocked the vintage gear for two games during the 2023 season, and fans couldn’t get enough of it. “Those should just be the regular set. So much better,” a fan tweeted. Meanwhile, others suggested that the Eagles, along with the Seattle Seahawks, should consider making their throwback jerseys the permanent alternative for home games.
